How Can I Be Saved?
One of the most common questions I get is, “Kevin, how can I be saved?” So many students come to me and are afraid that God can’t or won’t save them. So let me dispel your fears right now. Let’s look at Scripture and see how can we be saved. (All scripture used here is from the Holman Christian Standard Bible).
1. Recognize who you are
Read Romans 3:23 For all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.
First we must define sin. For those that may not be familiar with this phrase a sin is anything that you do wrong. Anything that goes against the principals of God. If you’ve ever told a lie, if you’ve ever taken anything without permission or paying for it, if you’ve ever hit someone, or yelled at someone those are all sins. This verse tells is that everyone in the world has sinned. Everyone, you, your mom, your dad, me, your minister, everyone has sinned.
2. There is a price to be paid for sin
Read Romans 6:23 For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Now we all know what a wage is. It is payment for something we have done. Our wage for sin is death. We’re all going to die. But this is not only physical death but also spritual death. To die with sin will send you to Hell! oops. Notice the next word though BUT. But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord! A gift is something we receive but we don’t deserve it. We’ve done nothing to earn it. Someone has given it to us out of love. That is the same case here. The gift of God is eternal life. There is only one way to eternal life and that is through God’s son Jesus. So how do we go about receiving this gift?
3. The gift
Read John 3:3 Jesus replied, “I assure you: Unless someone is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Obviously this is Jesus talking. He is speaking to a teacher of the day who is asking the same quesion you are, “how can I be saved?” And right now you are asking the same question that this teacher did, “how in the blue world can I be born again?” That would not only be painful for my mama but messy for all concerned! Jesus is not talking about a physical birth but a spiritual one. You see, Jesus is the way to salvation but He will not force Himself on anyone. You have to ask Jesus into your heart. You have to be born again. You have to chose Jesus.
4. Why Chose Jesus? Read John 14:6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father expect through Me.”
Jesus here is telling us all that He is the only way to heaven. Being good isn’t enough. Begin sincere in another religion isn’t enough. Being a good Muslim or good Buddist will only get you into Hell. Why? Remember the sin thing. Our sin has to be paid in order for us to face God. Only one thing can pay our sin debt and that is Jesus. No one else has the ability to pay for our sins. Only Jesus. Because of this only Jesus can get us into heaven. You see when Jesus saw us in our sin He took it upon Himself to do something about it. He came to earth through the virgin birth. He lived a perfect life, one without sin. He ministered to the multitudes for 3 years. He allowed Himself to be arrested, tried, beaten, and crucified. He died on the cross for our sins. He was put into a borrowed tomb. Then He physically came back to life 3 days laters. He rose from the dead and is physically alive today! He sits at the right hand of God ministering to His chilren. He did all that because He loves you and me. He did that for us to pay our sin debt. No one else has ever come close to doing that. Only Jesus. That is why He is the way the truth and the life. That is why He is the only way.
5. So what do I have to do?
Read Romans 10:9-11;13 if you confess with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord”, and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. With the heart one believes, resulting in righteousness, and with the mouth one confess, resulting in salvation. No one who believes on Him will be put to shame. For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
So many people try to make salvation something complicated. It’s not. It is quite simple. Paul, the author of this scripture, tells us that if we confess with our mouth. Confess what? That Jesus is Lord. That He died on the cross for our sins. That He is the Son of God. That He lived a perfect life. That He is who He says He is and did what He said He would do. Then if you believe in your heart. Believe what? That God did indeed raise Him from the dead. That God will forgive you of your sin. That God does have the power and authority to save you. Notice what happens then, you will be saved. Did you see that? It doesn’t say should or hopefully or maybe. It says you WILL BE SAVED! There is no dout about it. You will be a child of the King!
It is quite simple. Jesus makes it very clear. He is the only way to heaven. He is the only one that can forgive you of your sins. He is the only one to die and come back again. He is King. He is God and he wants to save you!
So what’s stopping you? All you have to do is pray this simple prayer:
Dear Jesus, I know that I am a sinner. I know that You died on the cross to save me from my sins. I know that You did not stay dead. I know that you rose from the grave. I ask you to come into my heart. I ask you to forgive me of my sins. I give you my life to do with as you wish. I know that You are indeed the Son of God. Thank you Jesus for saving me from my sins. In Your Name I pray, amen.
Now you are a Child of the King! Congratulations! The next step is very important. It is vital taht you get involved in a local Bible believing congregation.
